The Colonel Abram Penn Chapter of the DAR met on April 9 following a luncheon at The Landmark Center in Stuart. Ten members were present.

The meeting was called to order by Chapter Regent Louise Hansen. Guests at the meeting were Danny Chilton of Greensboro, N.C., and formerly of Claudville, and Joann Hill and Frances Radford of Stuart.

Chilton spoke to the chapter on “[1]The Role of Nathanael Greene in the Revolutionary War. ” Greene was a major general and is for whom the city of Greensboro is named.

Officers’ reports and committee reports were presented: Mary Ann Franklin read the president general’s message. Cathryn Vaughn reported on the raising of the American flag on Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945.

The benefits of driving vehicles with the best fuel economy in their class were discussed by Onie Vaughn. Flo Bell continued her reporting on the health benefits of green leafy vegetables like kale and spinach.

Lucy Rudd read a eulogy for recently deceased chapter member Shelby Clifton Cochran. The eulogy was written by Cochran’s cousin, chapter member Betty Banks.

Ann McConnell reported on the Virginia State DAR conference she and Regent Hansen attended in Richmond in March. Hansen appointed McConnell as chairperson of the chapter’s scholarship committee.
