A Day of Service on April 23 had a big impact on Elizabeth Vaughn, who lives in the Fairy Stone community of Patrick County.

That is the day a Christian academy class of 32 students from Cicero, Ind. spent the day at Vaughn’s home doing volunteer work.

The class was traveling south on their senior class trip when they stopped overnight in Stuart and learned about a number of projects at Vaughn’s that needed attention.

The next day, the leaking roof was sealed, an old deck was removed and replaced, a small garden was prepared for planting, leaves were raked and burned, trees were trimmed and branches burned, and a lot of general clean-up was done, all by the volunteer crew which also saw to it that two junk cars were towed away.

Vaughn was amazed as to what could be done in one day.

The work was arranged and supervised by Thom Morrow and other members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Stuart.

Materials used in the project were paid for by the students themselves, who attend the Indiana Academy.

Morrow said he hopes local youth groups will participate in future community service projects in the county.
