Dorothy Ruth Scales Smith, 98, of Mount Airy, N.C., died on Friday May 6, 2016, at Central Continuing Care.
She was born in Patrick County on June 14, 1917 and was a daughter of the late George Smith Scales and Mary Ila Gates Scales. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Council Smith; two sons, Wayne Jackson Smith and William Robert Smith; a granddaughter, Lisa Smith Collins; two sisters, Betty Scales Phillips and Mary Virginia Scales; and a brother, Henry Scales.
She was a lifelong member of Salem United Methodist Church and was retired from Pine State Knitwear after 39 years of service.
Surviving are one daughter-in-law, Carole Carter Smith of Mount Airy; two grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Moir Scales of Philadelphia, Pa.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy with the Revs. Joseph Kossan and Bud Cameron officiating. Burial was in the Oakdale Cemetery.
