“Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food.”

This profound adage speaks to the purpose of nourishment for healing and optimal wellness.

What does it mean to eat for health and to prevent disease through nutrition? Which foods can act as medicine to our bodies? There are a few key concepts to keep in mind. Have faith that God has designed us with intelligent immune systems to maintain optimal health and prevent disease. Science has shown that adequate rest, activity, spiritual care, and nutrition are the keys to achieving a superior immune system.

Most Americans know that receiving adequate rest and exercise is important for long-term health. Some Americans understand that spiritual care plays a role in reducing stress levels and finding peace, hope, and happiness, thus enhancing our emotional and psychological health. However, few Americans understand the relationship between nutrition and the immune system; people are often confused by fad diets and abounding misinformation. But thanks to advances in nutritional science, we can be assured that God’s health plan—a whole food, plant-based diet—is paramount for optimal health.

“You will discover,” says Dr. Joel Fuhrman, “it is not only the powerful compounds in foods such as berries and pomegranates that are so protective, but these compounds—when combined with those found in green vegetables, mushrooms, and onions in the diet—fuel the miraculous self-healing and self-protective properties already built into the human genome, together resulting in Super Immunity.” (1)

Keep in mind the acronym G.O.M.B.S.:

G = green vegetables and green leafy vegetables.

O = onions and garlic.

M = mushrooms.

B = berries.

S = seeds. (2)

Research is showing that these specific foods have tremendous healing properties. Eating plenty of G.O.M.B.S. and little-to-no processed foods will help us support our immune systems, reduce our illnesses, and invigorate our aging bodies. Remember to trust in God and in the beautiful foods, He has created for our enjoyment and health.

“Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.” 3 John 1:2
