The Economic Development Authority (EDA) discussed the Rich Creek Shell Building at its Oct. 26 meeting.

The Economic Development Authority (EDA) discussed the Rich Creek Shell Building at its Oct. 26 meeting.

EDA Director Sean Adkins said he recently submitted an application to the Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission for funds to gut the building and install a sprinkler system in.

“So, we can remove the firewalls and that will open up the shell entirely. It’ll look more marketable” to potential businesses, he said.

Adkins also plans to apply to the federal EDA for about $95,000 in matching funds.

In other matters, the authority:

*Discussed the Cockrams Milll/Meadows of Dan Freehouse Brewery. Adkins said the county submitted an application for funds to the Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission.

‘It’s actually the first ever program they had this year for private companies. It’s actually for capital improvements and equipment,” he said.

If accepted, Freehouse could get up to 25 percent of up to $30,000 back.

*Approved the Sept. 28 meeting minutes as amended.

*Discussed façade grant applications.

*Paid the bills.

*Approved the finance report.

*Discussed the Business Development Center (BDC).

Debra Shelor did not attend the meeting.
