Led by eighteen three-pointers, the visiting Glenvar Highlanders beat the Patrick County High Cougars 51-75 on January 24.

After falling behind by two in the first minute, a Tyler Marshall three-point shot gave the Cougars a 3-2 lead. The Cougars kept it close in the early going of the first quarter with solid defense. Glenvar, who took 48 three point shots on the game, slowly extended their lead throughout the quarter, taking a 13-23 lead after one.

The Cougars played well in the second quarter on both ends of the court. Noah Jessup had 5 points in the first couple of minutes, narrowing the gap to 5 points with 6:00 to go in the half. They would close it to 5 points again with 2:15 to go, but back-to-back three pointers by Glenvar allowed them to pull back ahead by 11 at the half, 30-41.

“I thought our guys came out with good energy early,” said Cougar head coach, Brian Chitwood. “They got out to a lead, and we chipped away and thought we were going to have an opportunity to get a stop with less than 30 seconds to play” to go into half time down by single digits. “They got a stick back right at the horn to go in up double-digits.”

Glenvar got hot in the third quarter from behind the three-point line, extending their lead to 21 after three, 40-61. Their hot shooting continued in the final quarter, closing out the game with the 51-75 win.

“They didn’t miss,” said Chitwood of Glenvar in the third quarter. “We tried to throw several different looks at them defensively, and it didn’t really matter what we did. Kudos to them, they made the shots they needed to make.”

Tyler Marshall led the Cougars with 11 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Noah Jessup had 10 points, and sophomore Jayden Corns led all players with 15 rebounds on the night.
