The Virginia Department of Education results of the 2016-2017 Standards of Learning tests (SOLS) indicate significant improvements in all schools in Patrick County, and all schools and the district have meet the requirements for full accreditation for the second year in a row.
Based on the School Quality Profile, since 2014 Patrick County Reading Proficiency has risen from 78 percent to 84 percent, Math Proficiency has risen from 83 percent to 87 percent, Science Proficiency from 81 to 86 percent and Social Studies Proficiency from 87 to 91 percent.
“We are excited by the consistent results we are achieving,” Schools Superintendent William Sroufe said. “Our goal remains to do what is best for children, knowing that the education we can provide them is the key to changing the world. We appreciate the hard work from our students, families, teachers and support staff. We could not have the success we have without a community that values what we are doing.”
He added that “while our overall philosophy remains that students should be taking fewer standardized tests, and that classroom activities should not be solely oriented toward taking tests, we continue to work within the standards pursuing the best quality education we can offer the students of Patrick County Public Schools.”
Sroufe said he is “proud of all who have contributed to our success: students, family, teachers, staff, community, cafeteria workers, maintenance, bus drivers, it truly takes all of us. Every day we get up and we strive to be better for our students than we were the day before.”
According to Dr. Matt Hurt, director, Comprehensive Instructional Program, said “Patrick County is now one of the top 10 in the state to outperform the trend with regards relative poverty and relative SOL performance. In 2017, Patrick County had the 17th highest SOL pass rates (out of 134 school divisions) in the state.”
Cyndi Williams, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction, said the school division “strives to provide the best learning opportunities available to prepare students to be college and career ready. We will focus on student learning and growth to move all students along a continuum. We are thankful for an amazing staff that serves our students.”
