The Patrick County Retired Teachers Association is on a mission to help local students affected by head lice.

For the past three years, the association has raised funds within the community to provide each school in Patrick County with kits to eliminate head lice. These kits are given to families in need.

Last year, the association obtained approximately 90 kits and distributed to each school, Phyllis Eastridge, member of the association said. Now, some schools in the county are completely out. Some have a few kits left, but there is a need for more kits to help finish off the semester, Eastridge said. “We need an additional $600 to be able to finish off this semester.”

This is a need for the community for families that are affected. The medication is expensive.

Funds raised that are not used for this semester will be saved to help start the next school year’s supply, she said. Last year, a pharmacist helped get the kits at a discount. The association is currently trying to work with two local pharmacies to see if a discount can be given this year, Eastridge said.

Interested individuals can send checks, made payable to the Patrick County Retired Teachers Association or PCRTA to the attention of Kristina Pombo at 1666 Via Orchard Road, Critz, Va. 24082. On the check, specify in the memo section that it is for lice kits.
