The Patrick County High School girls’ varsity soccer team went 2-0-1 last week. On Monday, April 16, the Lady Cougars faced the Bengals of Bassett and lost 10-0.

The Lady Cougars then played on Wednesday, April 18 against Floyd County High School. The Buffaloes won 3-1. Lydia Gunter scored the lone Lady Cougar goal on a penalty kick early in the second half. Keeper Izzy Martin had 16 saves in goal.

“We’re still shifting players around to different positions because of

injuries and illness. I think we’re starting to feel more comfortable in doing that. I thought everyone played really well tonight,” said Head Coach Sandra Rakes.

“We had several shots on goal and defense worked really well holding Floyd to only two goals in the first half and one in the second. This was Izzy’s first time in goal in a varsity game and she did an awesome job tonight.”

The final game of the week resulted in a 0-0 tie against the Martinsville Bulldogs. The game was forced into two overtimes; however neither team would be able to find a goal.

“We played good strong soccer tonight. We pressured the ball well and forced Martinsville to make bad shots. Caitlyn Hardy had a great game tonight, recording 20 saves in goal,” Rakes said.

She continued, “The midfield and offense worked hard together tonight pressuring them on their passes and winning the 50/50 balls. We’re starting to have players return from injuries so that should make a big difference for us.”

“I am so proud of the way we played tonight. We kept our heads in the game and didn’t give up anything.”

The Lady Cougars next game will be Tuesday, April 24th. The Lady Cougars will travel to Magna Vista High School. Game time is 5:30 p.m..
