The Patrick County High School track boys’ and girls’ teams hosted the Patrick County Piedmont District Invitational last Wednesday. The girls’ team finished in first place.
In the 400 meter dash, Armonte Carter finished second with a time of 1:06.64 and Ashton Collins finished fifth with a time of 1:11.54 for the Lady Cougars. Macie Rogers and Arielle Taylor had standout performances in the 800 meter run placing second and third. Taylor would also place third in the 1600 meter run with a final time of 6:20.20.
The Lady Cougars also took first in the 4×400 meter relay.
“Our team had a great showing for the district competition ‘defending their house.’ Our program has a small but mighty mentality and that was definitely how they performed today, especially with the girls’ team tying for 1st overall,” said Coach Lynn Deckel of the meet.
Senior Lexy Carico had a remarkable day, breaking the school discus
distance record with a 139.02.00 throw. Carico also placed first in the shot put event.
“I was especially proud of Lexy (Carico) managing to beat her own school record twice in the discus. She loves to win and loves to improve herself above everything else, and it’s all starting to come together as we head into the championship portion of our season,” said Deckel of Carico’s performance.
For the boys, Zach Montgomery and Jared Biedrycki finished second and third in the 800 meter run. Biedrycki and teammate Monroe Morse took fourth and fifth in the mile event. Morse would later return to run the two mile and finish second with a time of 11:21.80.
Marquis Brown placed fifth in discus and ninth in shot out for the Cougars.
“On the boys’ side, some team members were running events that they hadn’t tried before and many found some hidden abilities: Brandon Rohrbach ran his first 800 ever and managed to win his heat and Jared Biedrycki ran his first mile in about a year and managed to finish on the podium closely followed by his teammate Monroe Morse,” said Deckel of the boys’ performance.
“At this point in the season, we are looking for strength and guts when they race, and they showed that today in so many ways. I’m so proud of everybody,” she concluded.
The Cougars next meet is Wednesday, April 25. The meet will be held at Tunstall High School with a start time of 4:30 p.m.
