Harvie Langhorne Spangler

Harvie Langhorne Spangler, age 94, passed away peacefully November 6, 2022, at Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, NC. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Harvie was born February 9, 1928, to honorable Charles Langhorne and Kittie Cockram Spangler. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Frances Swiney Spangler. Also preceding Harvie, are 5 siblings, Samuel Maurice, Leila Evelyn, Benjamin Lesley, Thomas Wallace, and Charles Bishop.

Harvie graduated from Meadows of Dan High School. He was drafted into the US Army January 24, 1951. He went through basic training and radio school then on to Korea’s combat zone October 10, 1951. Harvie served in the 24th Infantry Division in Korea during the Korean War, reaching the rank of Sergeant E5 before being discharged January 19, 1953, to the National Guard for a 5-year term with a credit of 2.5 years for combat duty. Harvie was employed at Sperry Rand and holds a lifetime license as a Marine RADAR operator. In this capacity he worked with NASA for rocket guidance/communication systems. He is a past Commander and Life Member of the VFW Post 8467 in Meadows of Dan, and retired member of Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard.

He is survived by his four loving children, Belinda Eddins of Meadows of Dan, VA Debra Shelor and husband Robert of Meadows of Dan, VA, David Langhorne Spangler and wife Kathleen of Goode, VA and Beverly Fariss and husband William of North Garden, VA; seven grandchildren, Waverly Eddins, Sarah Eddins, Paul Shelor, Aaron Shelor, Wesley Langhorne Spangler, Paige Lee and Leslie Johnson; and six great grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Dr. Daniel Patrick Spangler and his wife, Dorothy of Gainesville, FL; four sisters-in-law, Virginia Pauline Ney, Brenda Carol Hoskins, Barbara Laverne Terry, Bettie Smith Spangler and a brother-in-law Rueben Roger Swiney.

Harvie was a long-standing member of Spring Hill Baptist Church, Farmer, Builder, and Property Manager.  He loved old time folk music. He played the fiddle, banjo, guitar and harmonica with family and friends throughout his life.

The funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, November 11, 2022 at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart Virginia. The family will be receiving friends from 11:00 to 1:00 prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Spangler Family Cemetery in Meadows of Dan, VA. Military rites will be conducted by the Patrick County Veteran Memorial Honor Guard
