A shooting incident reported in Patrick County occurred out of state and is under investigation by authorities there, according to Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith.

Local authorities responded to call received at 8:03 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30, from someone at Shooters Pawn & Gun, Smith said.

Authorities were told that a man suffering a gunshot wound was walking up the road and had been picked up by someone in a vehicle and transported to the pawn shop, Smith said.

Patrick County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Rorrer was the first to arrive at the scene. Investigator Oscar Tejeda also was summoned, the sheriff said.

Joshua O’Brian Scales, 27, of Pine St., Stuart, was transported to a Roanoke hospital for treatment in connection with the incident, Smith said. Scales was released on Jan. 31.

Patrick authorities determined the alleged shooting victim was transported by vehicle to Patrick County, for treatment of the alleged shooting incident that occurred in Mt. Airy, N.C., Smith said.

Further investigation of the case was turned over to authorities there, the sheriff added.
