The Patrick County High School Lady Cougar junior varsity basketball team open its season last Monday night with a loss at Franklin County High School. The score was 46-20.
“We had a lot of first game jitters,” said Coach Donny Rakes. “We are very young and inexperienced this year,” he explained. “Our focus is on improving in practice and getting more mentally prepared to compete at this level,” he added.
Overall, Rakes is happy with the potential of this group. “It is just going to take some time to grow,” he said.
High scorer was Sierra Hubbard with seven points. Erin Keith added four and Laken Rorrer added three.
In Friday night’s game at Halifax County, the Lady Cougar JVs won 49-37.
Sierra Hubbard and Laken Rorrer each scored 11 points with Abby Dillon adding eight. Jenna King had seven and Sara Caine added six.
“This was an excellent team effort,” Rakes said. “This was a much-improved performance in terms of limiting mistakes, running the floor and sharing the ball,” he added. “We did a good job of getting the ball down low for our big people.
“I was proud of their effort for a good team win,” Rakes said.
The Lady Cougars hosted Christiansburg Tuesday night.
