Alyson Nelson defends the Patrick County goal in last Monday’s game against Christiansburg.

The Patrick County High School Lady Cougar soccer team had a very busy week on the pitch this week, playing three games.

Monday, the Lady Cougars lost to Christiansburg by a score of 8-0.

Goalie Maya Watson and Caitlin Hardy combined for 12 saves in goal.

Wednesday, the Lady Cougars traveled to Halifax and lost 8-0.

According to Coach Sandra Rakes, the team started off slow and didn’t get any shots off. “We picked up in the second half, but our shots just missed the goal,” She said.

“Our defense held them to fewer shots in the second half,” she said.

Maya Watson and Caitlin Hardy combined for 10 saves on the night.

Thursday, the Lady Cougars hosted Floyd and won 3-2.

According to Rakes, this was a much better game than the two earlier games in the week. “We had talked about the things we needed to do from the previous two games and seemed more confident,” she said. “We had 12 shots on goal to their nine,” she added.

Candace Freeman scored the first goal for the Cougars. Floyd came back a little later and evened up the score 1-1.

Lucy Silva got the next goal for the Lady Cougars before the first half ended on a rebound off another player.

Floyd evened the score again in the second half, making it a 2-2 match. Then Z Cole scored late in the second to make the score 3-2 for the Cougars.

“We were able to keep Floyd from the goal for the rest of the match,” Rakes said.

Caitlin Hardy recorded 12 saves for the night.

The Lady Cougars hosted George Washington of Danville Tuesday night and will host Tunstall Friday night.
