The Patrick County High School Lady Cougars played their final home volleyball game of the regular season Tuesday night, October 17 against Magna Vista and upset the Warriors in three consecutive sets.
They followed up that victory by defeating Bassett in the first round of the Piedmont District Tournament on Thursday.
Despite a fierce battle back and forth with Magna Vista in the second and third sets, the Lady Warriors fell to the Cougars 25-20, 25-23, 26-24. Patrick County took an early lead in the first set keeping Magna Vista at bay for most of the match-up. The Warriors led a last-minute charge at the lead pulling within one point 20-19 before the Cougars closed the door allowing only one more point.The second set of the evening saw a much closer battle as both teams scored consistently throughout the match.
The score was tied at 7, 10, and again at 13 before the Warriors found their first lead of the night moving ahead of Patrick County 15-13. Patrick County regained their composure after being down 16-18 and moved ahead keeping their lead to close the set at 25-23.The Warriors’ determination became even more fierce in the third and final set of the evening. The two teams scored back and forth consistently, but the Lady Cougars managed to maintain momentum in the final minutes of the match to score the final three points of the evening ending the night 26-24.Ashlee Mesot had 25 assists and four aces. Izzy Beasley and Sydney Biggs had nine kills each.
The victory for Patrick County marked the end of the regular season.
“Tuesday was a great way to end the regular season,” said Coach Heidi Moore. “We recognized six seniors for their hard work and dedication in the volleyball program. The ladies are continuing to improve and we hope to play to our potential the next few games in the district tournament.”
The Lady Cougars continued their winning week in the opening round of the tournament at Bassett.
“We won in five sets against Bassett in the first round of the Piedmont District Tournament: 21-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-20, 15-12,” Coach Moore said.
“Izzy Beasley had 20 kills and 7 blocks. Ashlee Mesot had 45 assists and 3 aces. Sydney Biggs had 13 kills, 18 digs and 6 aces. Jenna King had 6 aces and 20 digs,” said Moore.Patrick County advanced to meet Tunstall in the semifinals of the tournament on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time.
