The Landmark activity staff members were honored January 23-27 during National Activity Professionals Week.

Each day we received a gift of appreciation. Friday, January 27, we were given a surprise party with staff and residents in attendance. It is a privilege and honor to work at The Landmark Center. January 20, residents and staff gathered in the living room to watch the inauguration of President Donald Trump. As we listened to his speech we became part of the many people there.

In the afternoon January birthdays were celebrated with cake, ice cream, and punch. Residents enjoyed the uplifting music provided by Vernon Harris and Shelly Roberts. Birthday gifts were provided by the Landmark activity staff. The gospel group, Almost There, entertained the residents and their guests Sunday afternoon, January 22. Beginning in February, the group will be at The Landmark Center every second Thursday evening. Thank you for sharing your time and talents with us. The residents celebrated National Pie Day on January 23 with yummy sweet potato pie and ice cream. Thank you to the dietary staff for providing the refreshments. Residents traveled to Mount Airy, N.C., on January 24, and enjoyed pizza for lunch. Thursday morning, they shopped locally, and the morning of January 31, they ate breakfast at a local restaurant. We are so blessed to have a great bus driver—thank you to Ray Gray. Volunteers Jim and Ellen Saunders led the game “Name That Tune” January 26. Residents win a prize each time they guess the correct title of a tune. Jim adds a lot of humor to the game, which the residents love. Thank you for your many years of faithful service. Landmark residents welcomed a new group, “Wayside Singers,” to The Landmark Center Friday, January 27. We are looking forward to their return in March. Sunday, January 29, was National Puzzle Day. Residents, joined by activity assistant Will Taylor, spent the afternoon working on a variety of puzzles. The residents will be beginning two new exercise programs in February, Tai Chi and Let’s Get Movin. Share Your Heart with Pasta will be presented by Blue Ridge Therapy Connection on Monday, February 13 from 4 to 7 p.m. Call (276) 694-3050 or find us on Facebook to preorder your meal of chicken linguine with Caesar salad and decadent mini cannoli for $8 per meal. Proceeds benefit The Caring Hearts Free Clinic. The community is invited to our “Hold Your Hand” Family Education Series which will meet on February 9 from 6 to 7 p.m. in the recreation room at Blue Ridge Therapy Connection. This series covers a variety of topics which affect families and caregivers who are currently caring for a senior citizen.

This month Tammy Kruse, RT, will present a program on respiratory health in the elderly. For more information, call Janet Ferraro at BRTC (276) 694-7161, or Melinda Collins at TLC (276) 694-3050. Light refreshments will be served. The Alzheimer’s Support Group will meet at The Landmark Center Tuesday, February 28, at noon. This program is sponsored by Southern Area agency on Aging, The Landmark Center and Blue Ridge Therapy Connection. For more information, call The Landmark Center, (276) 694-3050, or Blue Ridge Therapy Connection (276) 694-7161. A light lunch will be provided. February blood pressure times and locations are as follows, February 9: Patrick County Seniors, Rotary Field, 10:30 a.m.; February 13: Ararat Seniors, Friends Missionary Church, 10:30 a.m.; and February 14: Step Seniors, Step Building, 10:30 a.m. Balanced Living with Diabetes Series, a lifestyle intervention program for people with diabetes or pre-diabetes, begins February 16 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Stuart site of Patrick Henry Community College. This is a free class and seating is limited to the first 20 individuals who call to register. Call (276) 694-3341. Happy Valentine’s Day to each and every one! Until next time, see you at Landmark.
