This weekend the Patrick County Cougars wrestling team was represented at the VHSL 3A State Wrestling Tournament by junior Brian Lange.
Lange competed in the 113-lb. weight class and finished with a record of 1-2 for the tournament, placing him in the top eight in the state.
“Brian really started wrestling well at the end of the season,” said Coach David Morrison. “I think given another week, he really would have been extremely strong. He just ran out of season,” Morrison added.
“Unfortunately, when you battle illness and injury during the season, it wears you down. During our post-season run, we have been trying to ensure our guys are getting plenty of rest and taking time to recuperate so they will be their sharpest when it matters the most,” explained Morrison.
“We have all been very proud of Brian and what he has accomplished this season. This marks the second year in a row that he has made it to the state tournament, and he improved his performance this season at the tournament,” Morrison observed. “To finish in the top eight is a great accomplishment for Brian, but I don’t think he will be satisfied with remaining there for very long.
“As a senior next year, I think it will be safe to say that he will make some more serious strides in his wrestling. From talking with him, I think his next big focus is on gaining strength,” said Morrison.
“He understands that in any sport, in order to compete against the best, you have to be in peak physical condition. We really want all of our athletes to focus on reaching their potential and there just isn’t anything out there that can replace training time in the gym.”
“It has been a great season watching these young folks grow and mature in not only their wrestling but in their lives as well. We are all really proud of all our guys and proud of Brian’s efforts, especially,” Morrison said.
