Lena Mae Vaughan, 69, passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on Friday September 20, 2019 at her home in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. She was born on March 18, 1950 in Carroll County, Virginia to the late John F. Nester & Mable Irene (Spangler) Nester.
Along with her parents, Lena is reunited in death with her beloved husband of 12 years, Mr. Baxter Wayne “Blackie” Richardson.
Lena was a crafty woman with an eye for beauty. She relished working with her hands to create magnificent works of art. Her favorite crafts included crocheting, knitting, and painting. In her free time, Lena loved listening to music, was a trivia genius and loved cheering on all of the University of Virginia sports teams. Lena will be deeply missed and remembered for the amazing wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend she truly was.
Left to cherish Lena’s memory are her adoring sons, Jonathan Woods of Jacksonville, North Carolina & Jason Woods and his fiancee, Mindy Edge of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; her grandchildren, Jackson Sanders Woods, & Lily Grace Woods; sisters, Ann Wood & Linda Sutphin; her faithful kitty companion, Spangler; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins; a large, loving, extended family & many supportive friends and neighbors.
Per Lena’s wishes, her ashes will be spread in the mountains in Virginia. That event will take place on Sunday, October 6, 2019 at 1 p.m. at the picnic area at the Groundhog Mountain Overlook at mile marker 188.8 on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Laurel Fork.
At the request of the family, memorial contributions may be made to your local VFW or to Wounded Warriors Project, 1990 Fordham Drive, Suite 100, Fayetteville, N.C. 28304 or online at www.woundedwarriorproject.org
