A “Living with Black Bears” program was presented to young readers at the Patrick County Library’s Storytime by Master Naturalist Norma Bozenmayer. Children and parents learned how to behave if they encounter a black bear and also how to avoid confrontations by securing trash, keeping pet food inside and removing bird feeders spring to fall. Children examined a black bear pelt, bear claws and rubber bear scat. A demonstration of what black bears eat, and a bear song was also part of the program.
Children’s Librarian Sam Edmundson read the following library books to the children as part of the program:
“Baby Bear Discovers the World,” by Marion Dane Bauer
“A Best Friend For Bear,” by Petr Horacek
“Big Black Bear,” by Wong Herbert Yee
A free public program, by the Department of Wildlife Resources and titled “Living with Black Bears,” will be presented at the library on Saturday, January 24 at 11 a.m. All are welcome to learn about these beautiful wild animals and how to happily coexist with them.
