The Wharton-Stuart Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans will hold its Confederate Memorial Day service on April 11. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. at the Patrick County Courthouse in Stuart and will serve to honor those soldiers from Patrick County who served from 1861 to 1865 in the War Between the States.
This year’s speaker will be local author and historian Tom Perry. Following Mr. Perry’s presentation, a wreath will be unveiled and flowers laid at the base of the monument in remembrance of Patrick County’s Confederate dead. The ceremony will end with the SCV honor guard firing a 21 gun salute, followed by the playing of “Taps”.
The SCV is the direct heir of the United Confederate Veterans, and the oldest hereditary organization for male descendants of Confederate soldiers. Organized in Richmond in 1896, the SCV continues to serve as a historical, patriotic, and non-political organization dedicated to ensuring that a true history of the 1861-1865 period is preserved. The ceremony is open to the public and we encourage all to come out and join us as we gather to honor these Patrick County soldiers.
