Man held with no bond in connection with weekend incident

An Ararat man was charged in connection with an alleged standoff, according to Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith.

Authorities were summoned to an alleged aggravated domestic disturbance, around 2:56 a.m. on Saturday, March 27, according to Smith.

A caller to the sheriff’s office 911 center alleged shots had been fired, the sheriff added.

Patrick County Sheriff’s Sgt. Winfred Hill and Deputy Mike Harris responded to 210 Willis Gap Road, Ararat, and talked to a woman who alleged a man had fired a gun inside the home, Smith said.

The man allegedly fled the scene before officers arrived, according to Smith, who added that a firearm and bullet hole in the floor of the home were found during the investigation.

Gary Lee Ayers Jr., 32, was arrested after a brief standoff at the home on Sunday, March 28, by Patrick County deputies Christian Gilbert and Jesse Pickerel.

Ayers is charged with shooting inside an occupied dwelling and is being held without bond in the Patrick County Jail.
