A man was seriously injured in a three-vehicle traffic accident that occurred on Rt. 8 south, around 3:30 p.m. April 22, according to a report from State Trooper Noah Knight.
The accident occurred north of the Rocky Branch Bridge when one of the wheels came off a Ford F-150 truck operated by Jacob Payne of Claudville, Knight said. The truck hit an oncoming car and then crossed the center line and hit another car, he said.
Adam Haynes, a passenger in the Payne vehicle, sustained broken legs and had to be airlifted to an out-of-county hospital for treatment, Knight said.
Other drivers involved in the crash were Sherry Lynn Montgomery of Ararat, driving a 2009 Toyota, and Paula Grady of Patrick Springs, driving a 1988 Ford Taurus.
The CCDF Rescue Squad and the J.E.B. Stuart Rescue Squad responded, along with the Stuart Volunteer Fire Department, the Patrick County Sheriff’s Office, and Steve Allen of the Office of Emergency Management.
Payne was charged with driving with defective equipment.
Damage to the three vehicles was estimated at between $10,000 and $11,000, Knight said.
