Marie Doss Adkins died on Saturday, November 5, 2016.
She was born on July 19, 1930, in Patrick County and was raised in Horsepasture. She was a daughter of the late Roy Mayes Doss and late Naomi Biggs Doss. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 40 years Lawrence “Sam” Adkins of Fieldale, who died in September 2003; a son, Stephen Adkins; and a brother, Carson Doss.
Together, Sam and Marie owned and operated Sam Adkins Home Builders and property management subsidiaries since 1968.
Surviving are her daughter, Pam Fulton of Richmond; one son, Jeff Adkins of Martinsville; brother Bobby Doss of Collinsville; and six grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, three sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
She was a graduate of Spencer Penn, class of 1948. Over the years, she was active at Fort Trial Christian Church in Bassett, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday and vacation bible schools, served as deacon and trustee. She participated in many church fellowship activities, such as Circle Meetings, community food and clothing drives to help children in need and countless special church activities.
She also served on the Henry County Board of Equalization in 2001 and 2005.
Family will receive friends tonight (Wednesday) from 5 to 7 p.m. at Norris Funeral Services in Martinsville. The funeral will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Fort Trial Christian Church with Milford Witt officiating. Immediately after the funeral, burial will be held at Roselawn and a reception will be held at her home in Martinsville.
Memorial contributions may be made to Fort Trial Christian Church, 6356 Virginia Avenue, Bassett, VA 24055 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
