A grieving sister recalled the man who died last week as a kind hearted brother who loved his family and was dedicated to his friends.

Robert “JR” Martin, 29, of Patrick Springs, died March 7 from multiple gunshot wounds, according to authorities.

His sister, Tracy Martin, recalled her brother had the ability “to make you smile. He was funny,” she said. “He loved his family, his son, his dad. He would give you the shirt off his back. He always looked after his friends,” Tracy Martin said.

JR took his son fishing, but had few other hobbies, mainly because of his work schedule, she said.

“He worked all the time. He did construction work, and he worked on cars,” Tracy Martin said. She added that even though mechanical work was not among her brother’s favorite pastimes, he was happy to help friends and family with oil changes and other vehicle repairs.

“He was always helping people. That’s the thing. He was always doing for others,” she said.

His death and the circumstances of how it occurred “is so sad, and there are so many people this has affected,” she said.

In addition to Tracy Martin and her family, JR Martin’s three-year-old son and his son’s mother also are impacted by the situation, she said, but noted it doesn’t stop there.

The man charged in connection with the incident, and his family, also are affected, she said.

Clarence Michael Eugene Peery, 23, of Denise Drive, Bassett, was charged Wednesday with first degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

“There are just a lot of people that are affected by this. It’s so sad,” Tracy Martin said.

His funeral was held March 13 in Stuart. A GoFundMe account has been set up online to help with those expenses. Donations also may be made at Moody Funeral Services Inc. in Stuart.
