Marvin Lee McDaniel passed away at home on July 6, 2021. He was born August 7, 1936, in Washington County, VA, to Ernest and Abbie (Collier) McDaniel. He lived there for the first few years of his life, then moved to Sarasota, FL.
Marvin graduated from Sarasota High School in 1954 and soon enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in the Army until 1964. He then returned to Sarasota and joined the Florida National Guard, where he continued to serve until 1981.
He went to work for GTE and retired from there after 25 years of service in the Engineering Department. Following his retirement from GTE, he worked as a contractor both overseas and in the US in telephony.
Marvin later moved back to Virginia to Stuart, where he resided for 11 years. He moved to Lakeland in 2016. He was very active in the churches he joined in the locations he lived. He also enjoyed woodworking, playing the organ, and genealogy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Abbie McDaniel; six brothers, William, Robert, John, Ernest, Harry, and Jimmy; sister, Elizabeth Golden; and grandson, Tristan Sullivan.
Marvin will be greatly missed by both family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Nan McDaniel of Lakeland; sons, Gavin of Concord, NH, Christian (Tammany) of Lakeland, and daughter, Shannon Mixon of Port Richey, FL; three grandsons, Justice McDaniel of Boston, MA, Zane McDaniel of Concord, NH, and Liam Mixon of Port Richey, FL; one brother, George McDaniel of Sarasota, FL; two sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
Private services will be held at a later date and interment will be at the Sarasota National Cemetery in Sarasota, FL.
Memorial donations may be made to either the Wounded Warrior Project or to Doctors Without Borders.
