 Mr. Lawrence Austin “Cotton” Chitwood

 Mr. Lawrence Austin “Cotton” Chitwood, age 93 of Stuart, passed at his home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, July 8, 2021.  He was born in Henry County on April 5, 1928, to the late George Washington Chitwood and Annie Mae Hall Chitwood.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Phyllis Stegall Chitwood who passed away on May 1, 2021; one son, Lee Norman Chitwood; and four brothers and three sisters.  Cotton served in the U.S. Army as a Sergeant 1st Class, E-6 in Italy during World War II and the Korean War and had retired from DuPont.  He was an avid golfer, gardener, and loved painting.

Surviving is five children, Larry Chitwood (Renee), Donald Chitwood (Carole), Billy Chitwood (Martha), Jimmy Handy, Linda McCullum (Guy); nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Eugene Chitwood (Sammy); and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 13, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor Eugene Chitwood officiating.  Burial will follow in Patrick Memorial Gardens with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard.  He will lie in state on Monday, July 12, 2021, from 2 to 5 at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 730 E.
