The Stuart Ruritan Club recently celebrated three years of being a club and is currently conducting a Membership Drive.
There have been many Ruritan clubs in and around Stuart for the last several years. The Stuart club has the fewest members and would like to grow its club by extending a unique opportunity for businesses. An advertising sponsorship, which could be tax-deductible, would benefit not only the club, but also the community. A business sponsor would receive a plaque from Ruritan National and a window cling from the local club to showcase their support of the Stuart Ruritan Club.
Kevin Smith, along with his wife Pamela (formerly of Stuart), helped to form the Stuart Ruritan Club in 2023, and is currently serving as treasurer of this club. Smith said the club has given three scholarships and will be presenting another one during its July meeting. “This is a great outreach to our younger generation (and their family) to try to get more interest in Ruritan.” Smith added, “We now give our scholarship recipients a free membership, so they can get the information of what is going on in the Stuart Ruritan club, along with the quarterly National Magazine.”
“We are excited to bring Bingo back to the Patrick County Alzheimer’s Group, by hosting the fundraiser in October,” said Stuart Ruritan Club President Jennifer Sink. “We also have a HUGE concert planned for December at the high school.”
Pamela Smith, who is serving as the Dan River District Governor explained how Ruritan helps its communities. “All money raised in Ruritan is funneled back into the community at the club’s discretion. Each club has its own fundraisers and community service projects. On the district level, we’re there to support each club with training, membership, fundraising and fellowship, and that is just the short list.”

Stuart Ruritan Club Why Statement
“The Stuart Ruritan Club was formed from a simple truth. When people come together, the real needs of a community reveal themselves. Our club did not begin with a traditional blueprint. Instead, we picked up the mantle of a former club and rebuilt it through connection, listening, and a shared desire to serve. As members gathered, many of us entering new seasons of life, we discovered how deeply our community needed a place where neighbors could support one another, grow together, and strengthen the fabric of Stuart.
We believed a Ruritan club mattered here because it offered something rare. It offered a way to be immersed in your community, to know its people, and to respond with heart. Even as a small club, we quickly saw that our size did not limit our impact. It amplified it. We learned that when you show up consistently, you become a trusted presence, and trust opens doors to meaningful service.
Today, our club provides quarterly meals for the Celebrate Recovery group, supports local students and schools, honors veterans, sends care packages to military members, partners with youth organizations, visits nursing homes, sponsors ball teams, promotes mental health and Alzheimer’s awareness, and keeps our roadsides clean. Through scholarships and hands-on collaboration with Patrick County High School students, we are helping shape the next generation of leaders who will carry this work forward.
We were able to grow because a sponsoring club invested in us with financial support, administrative guidance, and personal encouragement. Their support gave us confidence, stability, and a sense of belonging within the larger Ruritan family. In turn, we have supported their projects and are now paying that blessing forward by helping another emerging club find its footing.
Our experience has taught us that starting a new Ruritan club does more than strengthen a community. It transforms it. It expands service, builds leadership, and creates partnerships that multiply impact.”

The club meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m., with a covered dish meal at Patrick & Henry Community College.
