The Patrick County Middle School football team opened its season August 24 with an 18-0 victory at Carroll County Middle School.
“Our defense was dominant,” said Coach Nathan Keen. “Carroll County only crossed midfield once and gained only three first downs,” he said.
PC’s starting linebackers; Nick Tarpely, Aidan LaComa, Cameron White and Jeffrey Moore, played great, making tackles behind the line of scrimmage, including three quarterback sacks.
Sam Hubbard recovered a Carroll County fumble and Nick Tarpely recovered an on-side kick for the only two turnovers. Carroll County was held to 34 yards rushing and 39 yards passing for the game.
“Our game plan on offense is to control the clock by methodically smashing the ball down the field,” Keen said. Patrick County only called one outside run play and two pass plays the whole game. “Everything else was straight at them,” Keen explained.
Quarterback Aidan Lacoma was the team’s work horse, running the ball 16 times for 91 yards and one touchdown.
Fullback Jeffrey Moore scored two touchdowns while running for 42 yards.
Other ball carriers were Tycarious Yellock (39 yards), Shawn Roman (35 yards) and Demontez Hill (13 yards). Cameron Terry caught one pass for 32 yards. PC finished with 252 yards of total offense.
“We are excited about the remainder of the 2017 season,” Keen said. “We know we have many issues that we can improve on as a football team, and we believe we can get a lot better. We have to get better because we know there is much tougher competition ahead,” he added.
The Middle School Cougars play at Floyd County on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
