Two brothers, Harvie Langhorne Spangler and Daniel Patrick Spangler, and their two first-cousin sisters Marjorie Spangler Cartwright and Bernice Spangler Irvin are pictured at the historic Mayberry Presbyterian Church in 1994. All four are still living. Thanks to Pat Spangler for this neat photo.

Mother’s Day turned out to be a sunny, beautiful day. Church service was beautiful with honoring the mothers there with words and flowers.

I was honored by several people who sent cards, flowers and a beautiful book “A Woman’s Daily Prayer Book” with a silver hummingbird on the front. I’m enjoying all of my beautiful things.

Thanks to the Martin family for including me in their Mother’s Day lunch. I’m so blessed.

It was so good to hear from my stepson Michael Reynolds. He sent me a beautiful Mother’s Day card.

It made my day when I got a note and a photo from Pat Spangler and wife. We graduated together. Pat lives in Florida now, but they will be coming very soon to their summer home in Fancy Gap.

I went to the Crime Watch program in Patrick Springs at the fire department. It was very informative. Sheriff Smith says he wishes more people would come. He has a lot at his other meetings.

It was nice to hear from Beverly Woody the other day. She has been really sick and had surgery, but I was glad to hear she was better. Please put her on your prayer list.

“Miss Claudine” Wood is doing well and enjoying all the pretty flowers she got for Mother’s Day. She loves company.

It was good to hear from LaNita Harris the other day. She seemed to be doing well.

The Patrick Springs Ruritan Club elected Pastor Burgie Penn for the Mother of the Year. That was a great choice. Sister Burgie has been one of my favorite people for many years. She is a Godly woman. I’ve visited her church a few times and loved the services and the music. Everyone was so friendly and nice and I felt right at home.

It’s always good to see Burgie and I love to hear her sing and play the piano. She’s always had a nice program for Black History Month. Congratulations, Burgie. You deserve this award. I love you.

The Soup Kitchen’s garden is still looking good and the deer haven’t gotten it yet.

I surely did enjoy seeing all the customers at All Seasons when I went out on Saturday to help out a bit. But as everyone knows, I love flowers. That day I saw a lot of friends also and that was very special.

The Men’s Ministry of Patrick Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church cooked a good meal of tacos on Wednesday. Come out and enjoy a free meal and a short message on Wednesday at 6 p.m. It’s good to get a boost in the middle of the week.

It’s mowing time at Mountain View Methodist Church Cemetery. If anyone would like to help, send donations to Richard Wood, 441 Busted Rock Rd., Meadows of Dan, Va. 24120. It will be appreciated.

Household hint: recipe hint for leftovers (meatballs). Sauté bell pepper strips until crisp and tender then add meatballs to the pan. This makes a good sandwich filling for French or Italian bread.

PARTY SALAD

1 large carton whipped topping

1 can sweetened condensed milk

1 15 1/4-oz. can crushed pineapple, drained

1 22 oz. can cherry pie filling

1/2 c chopped pecans

1 c flaked coconut

1 c mini marshmallows

combine topping and milk. Refrigerate one hour. Add all other ingredients. Stir well. Refrigerate overnight. Do not attempt to mold salad.

Food for thought

“Church life” doesn’t happen only within the four walls of a steeple-topped building. It happens as we connect regularly with those around us
