Mr. Cleston Monroe Phillips, age 74 of Woolwine, Virginia passed away on Tuesday, February 15, 2022, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, North Carolina. He was born in Willis, Virginia on October 29, 1947, to the late Mason Phillips and Ivah Mae Quesenberry Phillips. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Brenda Joyce Belcher Phillips; two brothers, Wakley Freddie Phillips and Roger “Haney” Phillips; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Archie Owen Belcher and Lorna Evelyn Belcher; one niece, Rebecca G. Conner; one brother-in-law, Edward Corneilus Soyars; and one sister-in-law, Carolyn Belcher Stowe. Cleston was a lifetime member of Woolwine Volunteer Fire Department and had served as vice president and training officer. Also, a former member of Vesta Rescue Squad. He retired from Naroflex with over 30 years of service and continued working for himself helping others with home and business repairs as long as he was able. He enjoyed working outside with his hands such as mowing yards, building, and repairing, hanging out at W&W Produce and Howell’s Grocery, watching westerns, and helping his son with his cows before his illness.
Cleston is survived by one son, Brian Cleston Phillips and wife, Jessica of Woolwine; three nephews, Jimmy Wakley Phillips of Meadows of Dan, Ronnie Harbour and wife, Linda of Woolwine, and Joseph Howard Goins of Raleigh, North Carolina; two nieces, Christina Phillips Hess of Florida and Melissa Ann Goins Penn of Ararat; three sisters-in-law, Fern Belcher Soyars of Stuart, Linda Kay Scott Phillips of Claudville, and Shirley Ann Young Phillips of Claudville; one brother-in-law, Ronald Stowe of Woolwine; and caregiver, Barbara Wood of Woolwine.
A funeral service for Cleston will be held on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor Kenneth Terry officiating. Burial will immediately follow in Jack’s Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
