Mrs. Rachel Marie Scales Barnes

Mrs. Rachel Marie Scales Barnes, 77, of Ararat, VA, passed away Tuesday, February 16, 2021.  She was born on May 18, 1943, in Patrick County to the late Jefferson Davis Scales, Sr. and Gladys Vanessa Gates Scales.

Mrs. Barnes was a loving mother, adoring grandmother, a caring sister, and a friend to many.  She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening, canning, and going to flea markets.

She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters and sons-in-law, Tracey and Bill Stump, Kathy Nichols, and Toni and John Lima; son and daughter-in-law, Raleigh “Buddy” and Jeanie Puckett; grandchildren, James Puckett, Pete Stump, Jimmy Stump, Stuart Stump, Tom Stump, Isaiah Puckett, Jeremiah Puckett, Lakin Crosby, Zachery Rogers, Wesley Lima, Nicholas Lima, and Andre Lima; great grandchildren, Midori Waycaster, Olive Waycaster, and Everly Rogers; sisters, and brother-in-law, Daisy Barnard, Jane and Michael Fulk, Fay Young, and Annie Tolbert; a brother, Jefferson Davis “J.D.” Scales, Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Barnes was preceded in death by her husband, Junior Lee Barnes; brothers, John Cardwell Scales, Jasper Steward Scales, Jerry Bryan Scales, and James Wesley “Jimmy” Scales; and a son-in-law Clark Nichols.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, February 24, 2021, at Hunters Chapel Church Cemetery with Pastor Terry Vaughan officiating.  There will be no formal visitation at the funeral home.  Online condolences may be made at www.moodyfuneralservices.com.
