ELA Instructional Coordinator Bentley Cornett will be coordinating the new Citizenship Pathway classes in Surry and Yadkin counties through Surry Community College.

The College and Career Readiness (CCR) program at Surry Community College is now offering a course to prepare students with resources, direction, and skills necessary for the process of applying for U.S. citizenship.

Jennifer Pardue, Director of CCR and Human Resources Development at SCC said, “I am glad we are able to offer this class as a wonderful resource for the communities of Surry and Yadkin counties.”

The flexible schedule is structured on an open-entry, open-exit basis to meet the customized needs of individuals. The course is available on the Dobson campus, Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Monday through Wednesday, 5 to 8 p.m. The schedule for the Yadkin Center in Yadkinville is Tuesday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Tuesday and Thursday 4:30 to 8 p.m.

“This new program is an innovative approach working to integrate non-native U.S. residents into the regions of Surry and Yadkin,” ELA Instructional Coordinator Bentley Cornett said. “The integrated curriculum will enhance literacy skills and aid students on a pathway to acquire permanent residency. We are excited for this opportunity.”

Enrolled students will receive instruction to improve literary and mathematical skills, which will assist them in obtaining their High School Equivalency diploma through the GED or HiSET. The class also prepares participants for desired employment opportunities or post-secondary education, and equips those interested in applying for U.S. citizenship with the resources and guidance required to pass the U.S. Citizenship Test.

Pardue said the class design allows students to receive instruction to prepare for the High School Equivalency program, as well as English as a second language.

“The citizenship component will pair nicely with the social studies curriculum that is already being taught in the program,” she said.

Documentation of enrollment to meet Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) requirements is provided upon completion of a minimum of 70 hours of active student participation. Call Bentley Cornett to register at (336) 386-3660 or cornettbm@surry.edu.
