The Providence United Methodist Church of Patrick Springs and the Patrick County Master Gardeners would like to invite the public to join them in the groundbreaking of the Community Fellowship Learning Garden! The two groups have been collaborating to create a new space in Patrick County for all community members to enjoy and engage in learning gardening skills. After a year-long hiatus from learning garden programming in 2024, the new space will allow the Master Gardeners to offer free gardening programming to the community, graciously hosted by the church. Providence United Methodist Church invites all of their local neighbors to help in building the garden and enjoying the wonderful produce that will come of it. The garden will be located on church property at 1021 Providence Dr, Patrick Springs, VA and will include 12 raised beds, an in-ground bed, trellising, accessible paths, dedicated children’s garden beds, compost area, and seating to enjoy the garden. The garden will be planted with a variety of vegetables and flowers enclosed in a 75 ft by 40 ft space with deer resistant fencing.

This venture is being conducted in order to build and foster resilient connections throughout the county and surrounding community area. This is a great way to meet your neighbors while building food security in the area. ā€œOur goal is to strengthen our community in the local area and the garden is a great place to do that. It’s a place that supports team building and communication skills while bringing many types of people together.ā€ said the Providence Community Garden planning team. If you’re looking for a space to connect with others, learn gardening techniques, and enjoy the wonders of growing food and flowers, the Community Fellowship Learning Garden is for you.

Programming will begin on Saturday April 5th at 10am with ā€œStarting a Gardenā€ where the public will have the opportunity to learn what steps have already gone into planning the garden, followed by a garden bed building demonstration. Attendees will then be invited to help construct the other 11 beds. A lunch will be provided courtesy of Providence UMC.

The following Saturday, April 12 at 10am, will serve as a rain date or additional volunteer day to help finish any remaining bed construction and begin the soil filling process. All educational programming will be led by Patrick Country Master Gardeners at the Community Fellowship Learning Garden hosted on Providence United Methodist Church property.

This project is made possible by a mission grant from the Mountain View District of the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church and the mission fund of Providence UMC. If you would like to donate, you mayĀ

More volunteer and free programming dates will be announced soon. Stay up to date by following the ā€œPatrick County Master Gardenersā€ or ā€œProvidence United Methodist Churchā€ Facebook pages.
