EFFIE G. BOWMAN

Effie Rena Gwynn Bowman, 92, of Ararat, passed away on Thursday, August 10, 2017, at the Laurel Meadows Nursing Center in Laurel Fork.

She was born in Patrick County on February 24, 1925 to the late Levi and Rachel Hall Gwynn. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Shirley Ray Bowman; a sister, Ella Marshall; and brothers, Curtis, Willard, John and infant Woodrow Gwynn.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend.  She retired from Spencer’s Infant Apparel after more than 20 years of service. She was an avid gardener, quilter and she was world famous for her Sunday dinners.

Surviving are two daughters, Linda Inscore and Louise Hawks; one son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Dianne Bowman; grandchildren and spouses, Ronald and Tonya Inscore, John Bowman and Becky Isaacs Bowman, Kristi and Jody King, Rachel and Jamie Hall, Kelly and Brian Lindamood, Jennifer and Hunter Moore; great-grandchildren, Levi, Jakobi, Robyn, Talulah, Katherine, Kayla and Jacob; and sisters, Elsie Bowman and Exie Evans.

Funeral services were conducted at 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 13, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, N.C., by Rev. John Bowman. Burial was in the Bowman Family Cemetery.

MARIE V. THOMPSON

Marie Vida Thompson, age 90, of Ararat, died  August 14, 2017.

She was born in Patrick County on August 19, 1926 and was a daughter of the late Thomas and Nettie Bowman Barnard. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Fred Lee Thompson; and brothers, Garland and Thomas Barnard.

Surviving are one sister, Icy Niten of Ararat; three sons and daughters-in-law, John and Darla Thompson, Jimmy and Marcie Thompson of Ararat, and Brian and Crystal Thompson of Dobson, N.C.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The family is planning a memorial service at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Ararat Volunteer Rescue Squad, 4690 Ararat Hwy., Ararat, VA 24053.

DOROTHY M. VIA

Dorothy Mae Via, 81, of Collinsville, passed away Tuesday, August 8, 2017.

She was born October 5, 1935 in Patrick County and was a daughter of the late Riley and Eldean O’Dell Gilley. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Maynard M. Via; brothers, Jesse Gilley and Marvin Gilley; sisters, Marie White, Ethel Fulcher, Inez Hollandsworth, and Deborah Gilley; and a stepson, Earl “Butch” Via.

She was a member of Amazing Grace Baptist Church and attended Bible Baptist Church until her health no longer allowed.

She is survived by three children, Diane Jones and Mark Via of the home and Donald Via of Penhook; sisters, Barbara Moore of Martinsville, Judy Nester of Fredricksburg, and Jane Gilley of Rocky Mount; one brother, Paul Gilley of Bassett; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial Services will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are by Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home, 30 Riverside Drive, Bassett.

 

DORIS F. WESTMORELAND

Doris Farley Westmoreland, 79, of Patrick Springs, passed away Tuesday, August 8, 2017, at the home of her daughter, Debra.

She was born June 12, 1938 in Glen Daniels, W.Va., to the late Clayton Farley and the late Vida Tolliver Farley. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ivar Westmoreland; a sister, Martha Jane “Tootsie” Paige; and a brother, Gene Farley.

She was a member of Wayside Baptist Church in Ridgeway. She had worked at Tultex for 25 years and later worked at Pannil Knitting Company.

She is survived by her companion and caregiver of 35 years, Dennis Duncan; daughters, Debra Horsley (Ken) and Diana Roland (Ricky), all of Ridgeway; one brother, Robert “Butch” Farley of Bassett; one sister, Joann Daniel of Glen Daniels; four grandchildren, Christie Beacham, Kendra Burleson, Richard Roland and Bradley Roland; and 13 great grandchildren.

The funeral service was held Saturday, August 12 at Bassett Funeral Service. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park.

 

ROBERT D. WHITT

Robert Dale Whitt, 61, of Mount Airy, N.C., passed away Sunday, August 13, 2017, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.

He was born December 23, 1955, in Mullens, W.Va., to the late Timple and Grace Vance Witt.

He was a mechanic for Carter Utility.

He is survived by two daughters, Kathy Miller and her fiancé, Lee Hayes, of Hamptonville, N.C., and Susan Whitt of Mount Airy; one son and a daughter-in-law, Robert Whitt Jr. and Tiffany Whitt of Mount Airy; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Carol Jones of Claudville; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Jimmy and Meddia Whitt and Michael Whitt, all of Claudville; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 19, at 2 p.m. at Family Worship Center, with Pastor Richard Barton and Co-pastor Gary Storms officiating.

Arrangements are by Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.
