WILLIE BALILES
Willie “Bill” Baliles, 68, of Spencer, passed away Thursday,
January 18, 2018, at SOVAH Health of Martinsville.
He was born December, 8, 1949, in Patrick County, to the late Ernest and Gracie Gammons Baliles. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ethel Spencer; and a brother, Hassell Baliles.
He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Elaine Gilley Baliles;
daughters, Mae Emerson, Ann Flood, Loretta Carter, Brenda Turner, and Jan McCambridge; sons, Johnny and Charlie Turner; brother, Roy Baliles; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held Monday, January 22, at Wright Funeral
Service Chapel. Burial was in Old Spoon Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

MADELINE P. HATCHER
Madeline Puckett Hatcher, age 82, of Patrick Springs, passed away Friday, January 19, 2018, at her home.
She was born in West Virginia on August 20, 1935, to the late Jerry Puckett and Florence Bowman Puckett. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Clarence Hatcher Jr.; a daughter, Janet Elder; a sister, Odessa Turner; and three brothers, Lester, Lawrence, and Jesse Puckett.
She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Surviving are three sons, Gary Hatcher of Patrick Springs, Daryl Hatcher of Martinsville and Lane Hatcher of Stuart; three grandchildren, Jeremy Elder, Jessica Gardner and Sabrina Adkins; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 23, at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Brothers David Freeman and Doug Elder officiating. Burial was in Patrick Memorial Gardens.

LORENE D. HOPKINS-PEGUIGNOT
Lorene Dalton Hopkins-Peguignot, “Bug” to family and friends, departed this life suddenly to be with her Savior on January 12, 2018.
She was born on July 14 1948, in Meadows of Dan and she was the youngest child of the late Foster and Belva Dalton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Lynda Marie Dalton; and her first husband, Garland Hopkins.
She was a graudate of Floyd County High School. She worked as a adminstrator assistant for East Hampton Rubber Thread for 25 years before retiring to care for her terminally ill husband.
After remarring, Lorene joined the Starling Bapist Church where she worked as the church’s secretary. In the last few years, Lorene and Tom lived in both Fieldale, and Myrtle Beach, SC. She loved antiques, her pet squirrels, and decorating her home.
Left to cherish her memories are her hearthbroken family, husband Thomas Peguingnot of the home; her only child, Christopher Hopkins of Roanoke; her only grandchild, Jordan Hopkins of Spencer; one brother and sister-in-law, Arlie and Jackie Dalton of Willis; her sister, Lois Smith of Roanoke; sister and brother-in-law, Essie and Garland Handy of Ridgeway; three nephews, two nieces, one great niece, and one great-great niece.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 22, at Sycamore Baptist Church, Stuart. Burial was in the church cemetery.

MAXWELL R. LAWSON
Maxwell “Max” Ray Lawson, 73, of Patrick Springs, died on Monday,
January 22, 2018, at his home.
He was born in Winston-Salem, N.C., and was a son of the late
Inez Ray Lawson and James Ruffin Lawson.
He was a member of Patrick Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church and was the owner of Patrick Trophy Shop. He was a charter member of the Patrick Springs Ruitan Club, a charter member of Patrick Springs Fire Department, worked with the Patrick County Recreation Department and was president of Patrick Springs Recreation Park.
He worked at the Martinsville Bulletin for 20 years and served in the
Army Reserves for six years.
Surviving are his wife, Linda Lawson of the home; one daughter, Jill
Garrahan and husband Duane George of Patrick Springs; two sons, Bartley Lawson and wife Jennifer of Patrick Springs and Mitch Lawson and wife Glenda of Wake Forest, N.C.; two brothers, Larry Lawson of Richmond and Rick Lawson of Belmont, Mass.; seven grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, January 24) at
Patrick Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church with Dr. Marion Poythress and the Rev. James Shough officiating. Burial will be at Providence United Methodist Church Cemetery with military rites by Patrick County Veterans’ Memorial Honor Guard.

James Roscoe “Jimmy” Marshall, 69, of Ararat, passed away Friday, January 19, 2018, at Blue Ridge Nursing Home in Stuart.
He was born in Surry County, N.C., and was a son of Joyce Culler Marshall and the late James Roscoe Marshall Sr.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 22, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, N.C., with the Rev. Arlis Thomas officiating. A private burial was held at Oakdale Cemetery.

CURTIS D. RATLIFF
Curtis Davis Ratliff, age 70, of Patrick Springs, passed away Thursday, January 18, 2018, at his home.
He was born in Patrick County on February 2, 1947 to the late James Alvis Ratliff and Vivian Craig Ratliff.
He attended Stanleytown’s Amazing Grace Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Patsy Bocock Ratliff of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Harry Mize of Patrick Springs; one son and daughter-in-law, Carl and April Ratliff of Patrick Springs; three grandchildren, Wesley Ratliff and wife Somer, Matthew Ratliff and Amber Mize; one great-granddaughter, Aubrey Ratliff; one sister, Shirley Lewis; two brothers, Chester Ratliff and Maynard Ratliff all of Patrick Springs; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday, January 21, at Stanleytown’s Amazing Grace Baptist Church with Dr. Greg Hodges officiating. Burial was in the Patrick Memorial Gardens.

WARREN G. SHUFF
Warren G. “The Basket Man” Shuff, age 96, of Woolwine, passed away Monday, January 15, 2018, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Patrick County on February 24, 1921, and was a son of the late Robert M. and Virginia May Foley Shough. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Agnes Rorrer Shuff; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Clark Shuff; four sisters, Ada Smith, Maude Rakes, Emma Clark and Maggie Clark; and six brothers, Thomas, Samuel, Ross, Sherman, Jacob, and John D. Shough.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a Purple Heart recipient. He was a member of Buffalo Ridge Pentecostal Holiness Church and attended Patrick Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church; and had retired from J.P. Stevens.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Ron Clark of Woolwine; three sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Dorcas Shuff of Elkin, N.C., Bennett Shuff of Woolwine and Barney Shuff of Yukon, Okla.; five grandchildren, Tabitha Sigmon, Tonya Randolph, Douglas Shuff Jr., Andrea Hooker and Felecia Haymore; 10 great-grandchildren, Damian Beasley, Hannah Beasley, Zachary Randolph, David Sigmon, AJ Sigmon, Lexie Shuff, Pasiley Shuff, Nathan Shuff, Charlee Shuff and Christopher Shuff; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Thursday, January 18, at Patrick Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church with Dr. Marion Poythress, the Rev. Ken Terry, and Douglas Shuff Sr. officiating. Burial was in the Buffalo Ridge Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans’ Memorial Honor Guard.

MARY L. SIMMONS
Mary Lawson Simmons, age 93, of Stuart, passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2018, at the Blue Ridge Therapy Connection in Stuart.
She was born on April 1, 1924 in Stokes County, N.C., to the late John William Lawson and Murpha Nelson Lawson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James “Babe” Simmons; a son, James Phillip Simmons; and a brother, John Junior Lawson. She attended Stuart Baptist Church.
Surviving are two grandchildren, Lindsey Simmons and Bryce Simmons; a daughter-in-law, Devon Simmons; and a special neighbor, Kathleen Layman.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 19, at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Joe Pauliks officiating. Burial was in Patrick Memorial Gardens.

SUSAN W. WORLEY
Susan Wyant Williams Worley, age 58, of Stuart, passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2018, at the Sovah Health Martinsville Hospital.
She was born in West Virginia on December 29, 1959 to the late Charles Wyant and Mary Wood Wyant. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Barbara Dodd; and three brothers, Butch, Bobby, and Bill Mann.
She was a loving mother and grandmother who loved her grandchildren more than life itself. She also loved the girls on the first floor of the nursing home.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Amber Lawless (Brad) of Stuart; four grandchildren, Hayden, Taylor, Malynn and Charlee Lawless, all of Stuart; two stepchildren, Russell and Ashley Worley; two sisters-in-law, Betsy Conner and Emma Hughes (Bobby); and two nieces, Samantha Hughes and Virginia Conner.
All services were private.
