Opal Marie Williams Hughes

Mrs. Opal Marie Williams Hughes, age 96, passed away peacefully at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, North Carolina on September 15, 2026. She was born to the late Dudley and Bertha Williams on October 10, 1929, in Patrick County, Virginia. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank C. Hughes; an infant son; sisters, Helen Roberson, Iris Payne, and Lillian Carter; brothers, Jack Williams, Earl Tosso Williams, and Clyde Williams.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Danny Hughes (Judy),  and Brenda Hughes McHone (Jimmy); grandchildren, Dena McHone Holliman (Jeff), Jon McHone (Angie), Justin McHone (Melissa), Katrina Hughes, Christe Anton (David), Brook Buckholtz (Tommy), Sarah Jane Simmons (Matthew); eighteen great grandchildren; twelve, great-great-grandchildren; also left to cherish her memory are three sisters, Sadie Williams Martin, Nancy Williams Hubbard, Barbara Williams Morrison; one brother, Nash Williams (Donna); one sister-in-law, Opal Williams; also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Opal was a member of Grace Baptist Church and attended New Life Community Fellowship. She and her husband Frank were married 60 years before his passing. Shortly after they married, they owned and operated Frank’s Place in Stuart. In 1955 they moved to DeLand Florida with their two small children. Opal worked at Sherwood Medical Industries as an inspector and supervisor. Frank and Opal loved having family members visit them during their years in Florida.  They moved back to Stuart after being in Florida for 23 years. Opal worked at several different places in Stuart.

She loved fishing, traveling with her husband, sewing, listening to bluegrass and gospel music. She loved yard sales and antique collecting. She loved and was interested in being with everyone she met, especially her family. She was a loving Christian mother to her children, a devoted wife to her husband, a daughter and sister to her siblings. She will be remembered for her loving heart and beautiful smile.

The funeral service for Mrs. Hughes will be held on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastors Jim Chruchwell, Wendell Terry, and Shaun Draughn officiating.  Burial will follow the service in the Lawson-Hughes Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and following the committal service at the home of her sister, Nancy Hubbard, 1360 Hazelwood Drive, Stuart, VA 24171. In memory of Opal Hughes donations may be made to Lawson Hughes Family Cemetery, 201 Pine Street, Stuart, VA 24171 or Joan & Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017.  Online condolences may be made by visiting www.moodyfuneralservices.com.
