The Patrick County Youth Wrestling team absolutely dominated the competition in their last tournament of the season in South Stokes, N.C., during this weekend’s Tomahawk Open. The team had the largest presence at the tournament with 18 wrestlers and brought home four gold, six silver, and eight bronze medals.
Wrestlers who won gold included: Wesley Horton, age 7, (three pins); Logan Rakes and Hunter Corns, both age 9; Josiah Shelor, age 8 and Colton Hall, 10.
Those who brought home silver included: Ian Martinez-Tejeda, age 5; Leia Cobbler, 6; Jaxon Handy, 7; Landon Moles, 8; Erik Martinez-Tejeda, 9; Tyler Cobbler, 10; and Ethan Cobbler, 12.
Those winning bronze medals included: Kenny Blankenship, age 5; Kris Blankenship, 7; Reid Corns, 8; Eli Lester, 8; Adryanna Register, age 9; Tyler Cobbler, 10; and Ethan Cobbler, 12. Tyler and Ethan Cobbler each wrestled in two weight classes. Reyli Martinez-Tejeda, 11, also wrestled tough in his matches.
Special recognition goes to Reid Corns and Eli Lester who are each age 8. Both fought hard against their opponents in the age 12 and under brackets they were placed into due to lack of participants in their proper weight classes.
This was the team’s last event of the season. However, many of these young wrestlers will be working with Chad Lange at the Mat Room on Main Street over the next four months during the team’s “off season.” The team will begin a new season in November.
Coaches and the team thank all of their sponsors, parents, and community partners who support the program. They also thank all of the wrestlers for putting in long hours of hard work to get better at wrestling
