The investigation continues into a shooting incident that led to an hourslong standoff and the arrest of a Patrick Springs man on multiple weapons charges last week, according to the Patrick County Sheriff’s Office.
Curtis Harold McBride, 72, of 1032 Mountain View Loop, was arrested at 11:15 a.m. on Tuesday, June 9, after an alleged hours long standoff, according to authorities.
The incident began at 3:31 a.m., when a shots fired call was reported near McBride’s home. Deputies arrived and allegedly determined that two different homes located across the road from McBride’s residence had been shot in to. Both homes were occupied at the time, and one of the shots was alleged to have struck close to where a three year old child was sleeping.
During the investigation, deputies developed probable cause to obtain a search warrant for McBride’s residence. Multiple attempts were made to contact McBride, however he allegedly refused to come to the door.
Members of the sheriff’s office tactical team were summoned, along with an armored vehicle from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office. Additional attempts were made to call out McBride, however authorities allege he still refused to comply.
At 11:01 a.m., the armored vehicle breeched the front door of McBride’s residence. McBride eventually appeared in the doorway, but allegedly still would not comply with sheriff’s office commands to come out. Deputies closed the distance and were able to remove him from the doorway and take him into custody.
McBride was treated for minor injuries and is being held without bond in the Patrick County Jail.
“I am grateful for our disciplined and well trained deputies,” Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith said, emphasizing the patient and coordinated effort which led to a safe outcome for all involved.
“I can’t say enough about the level of cooperation with our partners in Henry County, their Bearcat (armored vehicle) saved the day yet again,” Smith said, and added that the Henry County Sheriff’s Office has routinely assisted Patrick County in barricaded gunman situations by providing the specialized tactical vehicle.
“I am confident that countless lives have been saved over the years by its deployment,” the sheriff said in a news release.
McBride was charged with two counts of shoot into an occupied dwelling and one count possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Two rifles were recovered from McBride’s home.
The investigation is continuing, and more charges are expected. Patrick County Sheriff’s Lt. Steve Austin is leading the investigation.
The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources and the Virginia State Police also assisted during the incident.
