Patrick County’s Cross-Country Team traveled to GW Danville on October 5 to compete in a Piedmont District Race.

In the boys’ race, Sophomore Moises Cisneros placed 6th, senior Riley Brim placed 9th, freshman William Overby placed 16th, and freshman Riley Hubbard placed 25th.

In the girls’ race freshmen Sadie Martin placed 4th, junior Irene Smith placed 5th, freshman Alyssa Callahan placed 7th, and junior Chloie Wright placed 10th.

Because both teams have only four runners, they are ineligible to compete as a team.

Sadie Martin sprints to the finish line.

According to Coach Houstan Deskins, “I really think the girls would have an opportunity to qualify for regionals, and possibly the state championship as a team, if we could find a 5th runner.”

In the middle school race, Callie Wood, an 8th grader at Patrick County High School, finished 1st among all middle school runners. Her time was good enough for a 7th place finish in the varsity race.  Unfortunately, 8th graders cannot compete in varsity competitions.

The Boys Middle School Team placed 1st as a team. Eighth grader Noah Hiatt finished 2nd, followed by 8th grader William Turner with a 3rd place finish. Mason Cassell, a Stuart Elementary 7th grader, finished 4th. Hardin Reynolds 7th graders Nathan Callahan and Hunter Martin finished 6th and 7th, respectively. Mason Spencer, a 7th grader at SES, finished 10th, and Brandon Boden, another 7th grader from SES, finished 15th.

“This was a great effort by all of our young runners,” Coach Brian Chitwood said.
