Patrick Henry Community College will host Blacksburg artist Kelly Schrader for a gallery talk and reception on Thursday, December 8 at 12:30 p.m. in the Walker Student Center Art Gallery on the Martinsville campus.
Schrader will discuss the work from her show “See//Self: An exploration of self-portraiture beyond images of the self.” Her work has been on display in the Walker Student Center Art Gallery since October 24.
Schrader often uses a broad range of conventional materials as well as everyday objects to explore concepts of time, process, identity, and image. This show is no exception. Using primarily found materials, Schrader explores how an individual’s identity may come to be defined.
“The surfaces I gather have been processed by the world, and are marked with reflections of those environments.” Schrader says that with this work she is attempting to “decode the series of influences that combine to create an individual.”
The PHCC Art Gallery is a space where students and community members can freely appreciate the works of acclaimed artists. Primarily, the space is used to introduce students and the community to the work and technique of successful artists in the surrounding area.
The gallery is open to anyone from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Walker Fine Arts Building. For more information about the art program at PHCC contact Gerry Bannan at gbannan@patrickhenry.edu or (276) 656-0336.
