Patrick Henry Community College is offering the following continuing education classes which will begin August 29.
• Become a healthcare billing and coding specialist in just three months. Successful candidates earn Certified Billing & Coding Specialist (CBCS) and Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) credentials.
Students learn to translate medical procedures, diagnoses, and symptoms into ICD-10 codes to submit claims for reimbursement to insurance companies.
The program includes: Medical Terminology for Coders (75 hours), Intro to HIPAA (6 hours), MOS Word 2013 (60 hours), MOS Excel 2013 (45 hours), Medical Billing & ICD-10 Coding (111 hours) and Job Readiness (28 hours).
Classes will meet Monday-Thursday from 6 to 9:30 p.m. and every other Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from August 29 through November 30.
Tuition is $3,430.99. Eligible students pay just 30% of the tuition with the Workforce Credentials Grant. Additional funding assistance may be available.

• Basic Contractor Licensing Course: This eight-hour course provides a basic look at statutes and regulations governing contractor licensing in Virginia, including: types of licenses available and qualifications for each, standards of practice, prohibited acts, and how to avoid violations.
This course prepares participants for pre-licensure. It is intended for first-time applicants for a Class C, B, or A license and changing a business type. Upon successful completion, participants are provided a certificate of completion to be presented upon application for a contractor’s license. This course does not prepare students for the contractor licensing exam.
The class will meet Saturday, September 17 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost is $189. It will also be held Saturday, November 19 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The instructor will be Rodney Clark and the class will meet at the PHCC Martinsville campus in Frith 154.
• Tradesman licensure courses: Journeyman, master plumbers, electricians, HVAC mechanics, and gas fitters are required by the Virginia Board of Contractors to take a pre-determined number of continuing education hours specific to their trade. Plumbers, HVAC technicians, and electricians must take three hours and gas fitters must take one hour.
Each course covers code changes, general requirements, impacts on the job, and special equipment included in the respective codes. The continuing education must be completed prior to the license expiration date.
