Retired Judge Jess Frank Greenwalt, Jr., 79, passed away on Tuesday, May 10, 2022.

Former co-workers recall General District Judge Jess Frank Greenwalt, Jr. as a fair man with an impeccable character. Greenwalt died on May 10, 2022.

Greenwalt practiced law in Patrick County until his appointment as a General District Court Judge in the 21st Judicial District. He served as a judge for 35 years, and then worked as a substitute judge during his retirement. He was a member of the Virginia State Bar for 50 years.

Patrick County Circuit Court Judge Markus Brinks said he will remember Greenwalt’s patience the most. Brinks, who knew Greenwalt since 1992, said Greenwalt gave everyone a fair hearing.

“He was fair, patient, and was very good in educating younger attorneys as they were going forward in their careers,” Brinks said.

Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith, who said he knew Greenwalt for nearly 50 years, also remarked on Greenwalt’s fairness and “impeccable character. He just demanded that people be treated with dignity and respect no matter the circumstances.”

Smith said he will miss the friendly conversations he used to have with Greenwalt outside of the courtroom.
