A two-vehicle crash that occurred on Sunday, Aug. 9 resulted in a fatality, according to a release from the Virginia State Police.
A 2004 Harley Davidson was traveling west on U.S. 58, two miles east of Virginia 620, when a motorcycle allegedly crossed the center line and struck a 2018 Nissan Titan at 12:20 p.m.
The driver of the Harley Davidson was identified as Ronald Eugene Elliott, 70, of Ridgeway.
Elliott was wearing a helmet and died at the scene, the release stated.
The Nissan was driven by Michael Lee Hubbard, 76, of Meadows of Dan, according to the release.
He was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured in the crash.
Emergency fire and rescue personnel responded to the scene from the Meadows of Dan Volunteer Fire Department, Stuart Volunteer Fire Department (SVFD) and Patrick County Emergency Management, according to reports from the scene.
Ronald Terry, chief of the Meadows of Dan VFD, said Vesta Volunteer Rescue Squad also responded and evaluated Hubbard at the scene.
A woman who was a passenger on the motorcycle was airlifted to a trauma center, according to Terry and Steve Allen, coordinator of Patrick County Emergency Management. A landing zone for the helicopter was set up at Fred Clifton Park.
The roadway was blocked for hours while the incident was investigated and the road cleared of debris, according to Terry and reports from the scene.
At the top of Lovers Leap mountain, (U.S. 58), volunteers from the Meadows of Dan VFD diverted traffic to Busted Rock Road, Terry said, and SVFD controlled traffic at the foot of the mountain via Central Academy Road.
Terry estimated the roadway reopened to traffic between 2:30 and 2:45 p.m.
The crash remains under investigation by Virginia State Police Senior Trooper K.D. Mabe.
Terry said crews also responded earlier Sunday to a motorcycle accident on Squirrel Spur Road in Meadows of Dan. In that incident, the motorcycle ran off the edge of the roadway, he said, adding the driver suffered minor injuries.
