Rosa Magdalene Kirby Shockley, 86, of Stuart, VA died on Monday, December 7, 2020 at The Haven of Rest in Ridgeway, VA. She was born on November 20, 1934 in Mount Vernon, KY to John Kirby and Flonnie Nicely Kirby. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of fifty years, Charles Calvin Shockley, one sister; Joyce Robbins and one brother; John William Kirby.
She graduated from Eastern Kentucky University and began her career as a teacher in a one room school house where she even taught several of her siblings. She married Calvin in 1961 and continued her career teaching kindergarten and first grade in the Patrick County School system for over 30 years. She was a devoted Christian and an active member of Peters Creek Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was also a member of the Gideon Auxiliary. She loved quilting, gardening, volunteering and spending time with her loved ones.
Surviving are one daughter; Becky Epperson (Dan) of Chapin, SC, one son; John Shockley (Beth) of Stuart, VA, two sisters; Glenda Brown (Ernie) of KY, Betty Jo Williams (Glenn) of KY, John Kirby Jr. (Margaret) of OH, James Kirby (Marguerite) of OH, four grandchildren; Ashley Creel (Scott), Lauren Epperson, Kirby Shockley and Jonah Shockley.
The funeral will be at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, December 16, 2020 at Peters Creek Baptist Church with Reverend Terry Ragsdale officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Peters Creek Baptist Church.
Due to the covid-19 outbreak, all restrictions mandated by the guidelines set forth by the state must be followed.
