Spangler honored as Grand Marshal

Harvie Spangler, who served as Grand Marshal, was among veterans participating in a parade Saturday.

Harvie Langhorne Spangler was named Grand Marshal of the Veterans Day Parade held Saturday in Stuart.

Spangler, now 93, was drafted into the US Army January 24, 1951. He went through basic training and radio school then on to Korea’s combat zone October 10, 1951.

Spangler served in the 24th Infantry Division during the Korean War, reaching the rank of Sergeant E5 before his discharge on January 19, 1953, to the National Guard for a 5-year term with a credit of 2.5 years for combat duty.

He always said he went into the Army “kicking and cussing and volunteering for nothing.”

Spangler was born in Meadows of Dan February 9, 1928, to the Honorable Charles Langhorne and Kittie C. Spangler and graduated from Meadows of Dan High School. He is a member of the VFW Post 8467 in Meadows of Dan.
