Stanley Leroy Van Etten, 88, a minister, educator, and publisher, passed away on May 12, 2026. Born July 14, 1937, he devoted his life to faith, scholarship, and the preservation of American sporting history.
Stanley earned his double master’s degree from the University of Chicago Divinity
School and served as minister of Auburn’s Village Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and started Westwood Christian Church in Pensacola, Florida.
A gifted teacher, he served as an English professor at Auburn University before becoming Chairman of Language Arts at Gulf Coast Community College now Gulf Coast State College. He was known for his dedication to students and his belief in the power of language to shape lives.
After retiring from academia, Stanley founded and published Hunting & Fishing Collectables Magazine, which he operated for more than 20 years. The magazine became a respected resource for collectors nationwide, reflecting his deep knowledge of Americana—from railroadiana to early duck decoys—and his commitment to preserving the stories behind historic sporting artifacts.
Stanley is survived by his wife, Deborah Jones Van Etten; his sons, Stanley (Maria), John (Ruth), Thomas (Joyce), James (Michelle), and Edward (Kimberly); as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His legacy endures through his family, the students he taught, and the history he helped preserve.
