After turning in nearly double the amount of petition signatures required to appear on Republican Primary ballot in June, Senate Majority Whip Sen. Bill Stanley, R-Franklin County, announced that he will seek re-election to his current post representing the 20th Senatorial District.

“It has been a honor to serve the citizens of the 20th District.  Since elected in a special election in 2011, I have written and sponsored over 230 pieces of legislation that will help the citizens of Southside and Southwest Virginia, and 40 percent of the laws I proposed have become law. This includes workforce and economic development, protecting life, breaking the cycle of poverty, criminal justice reform, greater access to affordable and quality health care in rural and medically underserved areas, and the protection of companion animals,” Stanley said.

“Southside and Southwest Virginia are the greatest places to live, work and raise a family.  Every day that I have served our region at the State Capitol I bring our values to Richmond, and fight for its citizens, their needs and their values. I have been a strong voice for us, and if re-elected to serve the 20th District I will continue that fight,” he added.

Initially, Stanley was elected during a special election in 2011 to represent the 19th Senate District.  A year after redistricting, he became the Republican nominee for the 20th Senatorial District. In November 2011, Stanley was elected to a four-year term and in 2015, he was re-elected to a four-year term in the 20th Senatorial District.
