Logan Eugene Bevill

A Stuart man was arrested following an alleged firearm theft, according to Sheriff Dan Smith.

The incident unfolded on the morning of May 11, when Smith alleged a shotgun and other items were stolen from a vehicle near Salem Highway, just north of the Virginia/North Carolina state line.

A short time after the theft, a motor vehicle crash was reported on Virginia 103 in Claudville, Smith said.

Before Virginia State Trooper Ryan Lawson arrived at the scene, local authorities were told the driver fled on foot.

Deputies responded to the location to help Lawson in the search but were unable to locate the driver.

The stolen firearm was found in the crashed vehicle, according to the sheriff.

Patrick County Sheriff’s Investigator Oscar Tejeda identified a suspect and felony warrants for larceny of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon were obtained late Tuesday, Smith said.

On Wednesday, deputies were attempting to check the man’s home on Salem Highway when the man allegedly fled on foot into the woods.

He was apprehended a short time later by sheriff’s K9, Crash.

Logan Eugene Bevill, 22, was treated for minor injuries at Patrick County Family Practice Urgent Care and was subsequently booked into the Patrick County Jail without bail.

Smith alleged that Bevill “had a history of assaults against law enforcement, and we knew he had expressed that he was not going back to prison, so we were extra cautious in our search.”

Smith noted the Salem Highway area has been experiencing a rash of larcenies, and that the investigations of those incidents are continuing.

Anyone with information on the thefts is urged to call Tejeda at 276-694-3161 or Smith at 276-692-7012.
