A Stuart man was shot and wounded last week following an alleged break-in, said Sheriff Dan Smith. Joseph Harley Swisher, 29, was charged with breaking and entering of a dwelling during the night time, felony destruction of property, and domestic assault and battery in connection with the incident that began just before midnight on January 14.

That night, a female was allegedly assaulted at a residence on Collinstown Road, Smith said. The female fled to a nearby relative’s home. The suspect allegedly followed and entered that home and allegedly started to destroy property inside the home.

Smith said the homeowner acted in self defense and shot the suspect, wounding him.

The suspect allegedly fled the home and was later picked up by rescue personnel in Stokes County, N.C. He was then transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem, N.C., where he underwent surgery and was released two days later, according to Smith.

Swisher was charged on January 17 after turning himself in to Investigator Brian Hubbard. He was released on a $3,000 bond, according to the sheriff.
