Last spring, a memorial motorcycle ride for Patrick County native, Corporal Jonathan Williams Bowling, attracted bikers from all over the world. The funds raised at the annual event go to support graduates from Bowling’s high school who are pursuing a degree in public service at PHCC.
Sarah Bryant and Candice Jones, both of Stuart, are the recipients of the Corporal Jonathan W. Bowling Memorial Endowed Scholarship for the 2016-2017 academic year at Patrick Henry Community College. Bryant is a 2012 graduate of Patrick County High School and is enrolled in the Registered Nursing Associate Degree program. Jones is a 2006 graduate of Patrick County High School and is also enrolled in the Registered Nursing Associate Degree program.
The endowed scholarship was established in memory of Corporal Jonathan Williams Bowling who died in 2005 while deployed in Iraq. Corporal Bowling was a Marine, police officer, firefighter, and elder in his church.
Bowling was also an avid biker and an annual bike ride is held each year to raise funds for the scholarship which is awarded to a Patrick County High School graduate with a desire to enter into public service. The next Bowling Memorial Ride is scheduled for April 29, 2017.
